Isaiah Washington's Grey Area
by Julius Kane
Some things just aren't black and white, they're grey. Although the former Grey's Anatomy star thinks his firing was a black thing; I don't. However, just like everybody else I wish Mr. Washington would quite crying about loosing his six-figure per episode salary. I hope he diversified his portfolio before getting the ax. He doesn't need or deserve our pity. I'll reserve my pity for the brother on the construction site with the wife and three kids who loses his job. So please tell Mr. Washington to quite whinning!
But here's the real deal. Isaiah Washington didn't lose his job for speaking his mind but basically from putting his foot in his mouth. He lost his good job with dental and health benefits because the elite gay gate-keepers in Hollywood wanted to send a message: "don't fuck with us!" Just like the big mouth retired basketball star Tim Hardaway who got banned from the all-star weekend, Washington felt the wrath of 'The gay syndicate'. There was a conspiracy. That's right I said it: conspiracy!
Yeah, a well connected group of producers, directors, actors, comedians, studio executives, stage hands, and radicals have formed a secret society. Their goal is to spread their way of life across America through mass media. They have enough power and money behind them to effectively crush any descending voices that stand in their way, mock them, tease them, or run off at the mouth. In their neck of the woods it's trendy and cool being gay. Coming out of the closet means a lifetime of celebrations and parties.
The wall that separates the 'crooked' from the 'straight' is getting taller. There's been a bitter war raging between the two for many years now. And it ain't gettin' no better. Isaiah Washington was just another casualty. I preferred seeing his talents on the big screen anyway. I'm sure black women all across America
(a few men too) are thankful they no longer have to suffer through scenes of Isaiah Washington kissing and grinding all over that skinny Asian chick anymore.

0465002064 Debating Race by Michael Eric Dyson;Whether Chronicling the Class conflict in the African-American community or exposing the failings of the government response in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Michael Eric Dyson has never shied away from controversy. Debating Race gives readers a front row seat as he spars with politicians, pundits, and public intellectuals. From John Kerry and John McCain to Ann Coulter and the hosts of television's "The View"--Dyson shows the mental agility and rhetorical tenacity that have made him one of America's most astute intellectuals.
1560255846 Head Negro in Charge Syndrome by Norman Kelley; This is a strong, critical examination of black political and intellectual leadership in the post-civil rights era. According to crime writer and journalist Kelley, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Cornel West, among others, suffer from the HNIC (Head Negro in Charge) syndrome, a condition in which self-appointed black "leaders" are more interested in getting attention for themselves, and being seen as leaders, than in legitimately trying to improve the lives of African Americans through public policy and economic development initiatives. Kelley recommends strategic nonvoting-blacks organized to withhold their votes from ineffective candidates in regions where blacks are a cohesive voting bloc that Democrats rely on. Kelley's tone and presentation is that of an astute and informed citizen willing to shake up the system to make it better. Refreshing and readable, this original work is suitable for public and academic libraries.
0385509936 Medical Apartheid (HB);This groundbreaking study documents that the infamous Tuskegee experiments, in which black syphilitic men were studied but not treated, was simply the most publicized in a long, and continuing, history of the American medical establishment using African-Americans as unwitting or unwilling human guinea pigs. It covers a wide range of topics—the history of hospitals not charging black patients so that, after death, their bodies could be used for anatomy classes; the exhaustive research done on black prisoners throughout the 20th century—and paints a powerful and disturbing portrait of medicine, race, sex and the abuse of power.
1932841245 Not In My Family: AIDS in the African American Community by Gil Robertson; Reflecting on the diagnosis of a husband, the loss of a friend or the survival of a mother, the 58 first-person narratives collected here give voice to bald statistics, such as that AIDS is the #1 killer of black women between the ages of 24 and 34. Famous voices, such as Al Sharpton, Patti LaBelle and Randall Robinson, as well as four congressional representatives are here, but the full power of this book rises from the personal testimonies of African-Americans writing from varied sexual, gender, class and lifestyle perspectives. This passionate collection is strengthened by William Yarbro's context-setting essay and highly practical advice from Jocelyn Elders, Herndon Davis and Dyana Williams. "Having watched countless accounts of the virus's impact on the African American community," Robertson writes, "I was dismayed by how few African Americans were an active part of this dialogue." Not any longer: those voices are loud and clear.
1559708042 Race Manners in the Twenty-First Century: Navigating the Minefield Between Black and White Americans in an Age of Fear by Bruce A Jacobs; In a frank, intelligent guide intended for both whites and blacks, Jacobs explores the resentments that thwart a genuine dialogue on race. He lays bare the "wildly, even hysterically" exaggerated fear of African-American males held by many whites, and he urges white people to recognize that a racial double standard exists in law enforcement. Jacobs, a poet and essayist, describes how, as an African-American, he grew up surrounded by racial hatred in predominantly white, middle-class Rochester, N.Y. Nevertheless, he cautions that many blacks have succumbed to a siege mentality, judging all whites as harshly and as broadly as they feel themselves to be judged. While supporting affirmative action, he acknowledges that this policy comes with a price involving sacrifice by some whites for the greater good.
0767921178 Untold Glory: African Americans in Pursuit of Freedom, Opportunity, and Achievement by Alan B Govenar;"Untold Glory "offers a fresh perspective on one of the most fundamental elements of American history— the conquest of new frontiers. In twenty-seven fascinating first-person accounts, African Americans from different eras, backgrounds, and occupations explore and reflect on the meaning of "frontier," both literally and metaphorically. This collection chronicles the search for freedom and opportunity and the achievement of success in a wide variety of fields. The contributors all pushed beyond self-imposed or culturally enforced boundaries to pursue their dreams and ambitions. (What Every African American Household Should Own)

0913543780 Stolen Legacy: Greek Philosophy is Stolen Egyptian Philosophy by George G M James; Challenging the notion that civilization originated in Greece, this uncompromising classic argues that the true authors of Greek philosophy were not Greeks but Egyptians, and that the theft of this great African legacy led to the erroneous belief that the inhabitants of the African continent have made no contribution to the history of philosophy. Originally published in 1954, this edition features a new introduction by Molefi Kete Asante.
