Ten Things Every Black Man Must Do Before He Dies

A Must Do Situation, February 20, 2007
Reviewer:Sharel Love "Sharel E. Gordon-Love, Author" (Bridgeport, CT)

Author Julius Kane has taken the time to school Black Men and inform Black women about the things every Black man must do before he dies. The rules for engagement are very simple to follow and are a lot of common sense. This sometimes very funny, very true book spoke volumes to me as a woman, giving me the opportunity to share author Kane's views with some men in my life. These rules are simple:

10.Be A Man, Stand Up For Something!
9.  Travel - Broaden Your Horizons
8. Get A White Woman (Yes Y'all He Said It!)
7. Do You!
6. Say What's On Your Mind And In Your Heart
5. Revenge (Payback For Real)
4. Fall In Love - Get Married - Have Children
3. Help Your Brother
2. Spirituality
1. Achievement And Accomplishment

What I loved about this book is how author Kane speaks about the women in a Black man's life and how she should be treated. He also admonished the men to take care of their woman on every level and in every aspect, especially and in particular her sexual health. A lot was shared here and I appreciate the approach that was taken on getting the message across of the importance of doing these ten things. Now I can't say that I agree with them all, but I commend author Kane for putting it out there for what it is for Black men and women. I would recommend this book to every Black person just to get another view and level of responsibility and accountability.

Demographically Challenged

Demographically challenged,
always on someone’s list.
burdened down,
by all this damn analysis.

Demonized,
in order to symbolize
the negative ingredient in this melting pot.
Extensively scrutinized,
as the major player in a government plot.

Been economically betrayed.
so I’m negatively portrayed
as the villian
no matter what scenario is given.

Categorized,
by my responses and reactions to your actions.
all aspects of my life have been media intensified.
work ethic scrutinized.
family life, demoralized.
you won’t believe how many times I’ve been denied.

Economy/paternity/education/incarceration
you pick the list
I guarantee,
my name is all over it.

Judged/weighed/measured/labeled
And put on America’s shelf.
Classified and sold as substandard.
Ingredients printed across my chest says
I’ve been dissected and rejected.

Still-
Constantly hated.
Your lone, demographic statistic.

This poem is an excerpt from Insurrection by Julius Kane

Review from Insurrection
Insurrection by Julius Kane is a must have for anyone who reads, writes, loves or breathes poetry and verse. Julius Kane’s writing styles are an interesting mix of old and new school verse. Kane sketches pictures with words of the stark realities of our current state of being. Fueled by his passion for words, Julius Kane delivers a poetic page turner which is something most unusual in verse. With his skillful blend of humor, observation and satire, Insurrection is the most carefully guided work to come along in years. The blunt passion that is often missing but always needed in verse, Insurrection has abundance.  Julius Kane’s social conscious is painfully clear with each turn of a page.

Breaking Writer's Block

Stress keeps a lot of people from writing. But there are those whose ink pens turn into fire when the pressure is on. Did you ever wonder why some authors can churn out two or three books a year while others can barely ink one every 5 years? Here's the simple answer; or maybe not so simple: Content or genius.

If you're excited about your topic ideas can come fast and furious. All you need do is put it on paper. In other words, stop writing about bland repetative subjects and start writing about the unusual. Find a passionate topic and roll with it. Grinding out words about subjects that you dread kills the spirit of writing. Writing should be fun.

Now, a literary genius is endowed with so much imagination and energy that they can experience months of feverish creativity; allowing them to complete unbelievable amounts of work. That's probably not you.

If you don't fall into either of these catagories, don't panic. Help is on the way.  Writer's block is psychological. So I have some great tips on how to stir your brain.

*Never watch television (the idiot box) when you're trying to write. I'm sure your parents told you that when you were a kid.

*Pump oxygin to your brain. Either go buy an oxygin tank or go jogging. Exercise stimulates the mind.

*Have a stiff drink to relax. Some of the greatest writers of all time were alcoholics. (no plans perfect)

*Imediately after sex, write something. Sex relief really works. It takes the edge off. (men, that gives you a great excuse not to cuddle.)

*Always keep a pen and pad or mini-recorder with you. It's just as important as your car keys. So whenever or wherever the spirit hits you you're prepared.

*Mood music.(for God's sake no rap) I prefer jazz.

*Lock your crying, nagging, worrysome kids out of the house. They are a major distraction.

*Location, location, location! Go somewhere., anywhere. Check into a local motel if you've got to. Go to the beach. Sit in the park. You have to change scenery occationally. Sitting around staring at your four walls and ragedy couch is very uninspiring.

Now get to work!
